How to overclock to the maximum a nVidia 9600M GT (8600M, 9700M, …)
Today we are going to put our nVidia 9600M GT to its maximum performance, which hold up to 140% of its initial capacity!
Graphics cards essentially have 3 “clocks” at different frequencies, the GPU (core chip that makes all the calculations), the DDR memory (where textures are stored and read) and the SHADER (which processes each pixel individually parallel to the GPU)
There are two ways to overclock these graphics cards, hardware (BIOS flashing) and software (nvidia software)
Now we are going to the heart of the matter, if we overclock the card is best to keep the GPU:DDR ratio and DDR:SHADER ratio, I’ve seen many overclocks that work very well without caring this proportion, but if we do this we will avoid bugs (black screens) and the scores in 3Dmark will rise proportionally to the overclock, this will not happen if we went up with the GPU and not with the DDR, etc …
Therefore, for the 9600M GT we have this values (see at http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA -GeForce-9600M-GT.9449.0.html )
Core Speed 500 MHz
Shader Speed 1250 MHz
Memory Speed 800 MHz
Well, I have tested some configurations an I carry the core to 660 MHz mantaining the proportion (AND ALWAYS GETTING WITH THE DIVISION NATURAL NUMBRES WITHOUT DECIMALS).
I had 5600 marks before and now i have 7636 !!!!
500 / 1250 = 0.4 SHADER
500 / 800 = 0.625 DDR
For 660:
660 / 0.4 = 1650 MHz
660 / 0.625 = 1056 MHz
So let’s open the tool and put the values [660 / 1056 / 1650], sit over a couch in order not to fall, and watch the 3Dmark score!

Worked great for my MSI GX620.

Acer Empowering Technology was the answer. The Power mode for graphics on “High performance” was set to “High”, not “Maximum”. My 3Dmarks score raised to 6486. I’m relieved!
I have found a solution to be able to overclock my gpu. I had Ultramon installed and it somehow blocked the clocking, because when I uninstalled it, I could clock. But still, the highest recorded clocks during 3Dmark is [275/300/550]. Any clues?
When I run 3Dmarks 2006, I get only 2472 points! Something has to be wrong! I will try to uninstall everything that has something to do with nvidia, and start fresh. I hope this is software-related.
Hi!
I’m trying to overclock my 9600M GT on an Acer Aspire 5930G. First of all – I’m using the Nvidia System Monitor to monitor my current clock speeds, and it seems that the highest it records is 275/300/550, even when I’m gaming. I’ve tried several driver versions, nothing helps. And when I try to overclock using “performance” it won’t accept my values. It says: “The changes are not valid, and won’t be applied”. Have you experienced anyting like this before? I’m using Vista Home Premium.
I’ve also had problems playing 720p .mkv’s, it’s all laggy, and I’m wondering if this is connected somehow…
Hym I have to say, that the highest clocks as I achieved on my laptop was 690/960/1725 in ntune, so I think memory clock give us as many point in 3dmark06 as you have. With my clocks I get almost 7000pkt point but CPU is P8400@2.26GHz
@John
This clocks are for testing, bechmarking, or gamming with a good cooled laptop, I use 650/900/1625 for daily use.
Hm when I set those clockes again, I got the messages from windows, that driver cause a problem and it must be bla bla bla, after that I run once again atitool with scanning artifacts and standard clockes was 400@300 so I think it’s some driver shield after crash or sth like that. Although yours clockes are too high:-/
Ok I will try this
@John
Try again, but first open the “nVidia Monitor” and after the nVidia performace, use the 6.02 version instead of 6.03, and it will accept your clocks
Hi, I have samsung r560 with gf 9600gt gddr3. I overlocked it with the ntune: 690@960@1725 and I got near 7000points in 3dmark06, so when I find your tutorial I downloaded this software from nvidia and tried yours clockes, but they are too high unfortunately. When I apply this clocked and run scan for artifacts in atitool the video card didn’t want to turn on the level 3, so this overclock settings, it works on 400@300 clocks. I tried again, but when I applied clocks the screen show me lots of broken pixels, so how I can see what the max is for my card? Sorry for english;-)
